Cap and Trade should be more rightly called "Cap and Tax", especially for the poor and elderly. Pres. Obama even admits Cap and Trade will cause skyrocketing costs for those of us who use energy, from electricity to gas, from heat to farming, all in the name of reducing our carbon footprint. Adding tax and regulatory burdens during a terrible recession is not a winning strategy.
The truth is, America has reduced its carbon footprint from vehicles by 90% since the 60's. We have also reduced our emissions for other energy, such as coal and natural gas.
What the Administration and his cronies don't seem to understand is people want heat in the winter. I know he was born in Hawaii, but he lived in Illinois and should know how important it is to have affordable heat and electricity.
According to National Geographic, China has been responsible for 60% of all carbon emissions worldwide, and India is responsible for somewhere around 20-30% of all carbon emissions since 2002. That's 80-90% of all carbon emissions worldwide. So even if we started living in caves and walking everywhere tomorrow, there really won't be any significant change.
It doesn't make any sense to me to punish and tax our businesses, farms, poor, and elderly in a Quixotic tilt at a much disputed windmill. Pres. Obama admits that Cap and Trade will cause energy costs to "skyrocket".
Cap and Trade is just a fancy way to tax the poor and elderly. They are the ones that will feel the increase the most. They are the ones who will suffer. They will pay more for heat and air conditioning, more for gas to get around to their jobs and doctor appointments, more for food at the store. More more more just to get by in life, for no good reason. Farmers will have less of a margin, food costs will skyrocket, and everyone suffers. Nothing good comes from Cap and Trade. Even Warren Buffet, the "Midwest Billionaire", and strong supporter of liberal causes, has called it "simply a tax on the poor".
Not all scientists believe in global warming. Those that do, not all agree that it is driven by human activity. The challenges that are ahead of us include how to feed our people, getting water to the cities, and how to maintain our lifestyles. Until the science universally supports global warming, I think that Cap and Trade is just another bad idea by the President.
